In a bustling city, students from 

 are actively engaged in a project titled "EcoFlow Revive" aimed at addressing water issues surrounding Banani Lake. This dedicated group led by Hasib isn't merely involved in cleanup efforts; their objective is to transform the lake into a sustainable water source for the Korail community. Hasib along with his team is engaging with the local residents. They are conducting water analyses in their laboratory, and employing scientific methodologies to comprehend the challenges, the whole team disseminates valuable information through accessible workshops. "EcoFlow Revive" utilizes technology to monitor water quality and collaborates with like-minded partners. Departing from conventional approaches, the team is effecting change and extending an invitation for collective participation. Together, this group led by their incredible leader is striving for significant transformations and prompting reflection on how individual actions can contribute to environmental well-being.

In a world where the echoes of individual struggles often drown in the cacophony of daily life, the Global Wall of Goodwill, a project initiated by the Social Impact Lab(SIL) at BRAC University emerges as a profound testament to the transformative power of empathy, unity, and shared experiences. In a transformative celebration of unity and empathy, the Global Wall of Goodwill Exhibition 2023 was held on December 12th at the new campus of BRAC University. This pioneering event, organized by the Social Impact Lab(SIL) in collaboration with the Outreach Team, Office of Registrar, School of GenEd and the Arts and Photography Society- BRAC University, marked a significant milestone in mental health awareness, drawing participants from Dhaka's esteemed educational institutions, including St. Joseph Higher Secondary School, Shaheed Birottom Lt. Anowar Girls' College, Dhaka Residential Model College, Noubahini College Dhaka, Oxford International School and the Aga Khan Academy.

Stepping into the festive ambiance of the workshop, participants were greeted by insightful discussions led by esteemed speakers. Adnan Hossain, founder of the It’s Humanity Foundation, Hura Jannat Shikha, Asst. Professor of Psychology and student counselor at Noubahini College, Dhaka,Zohora Parveen, clinical psychologist and Anne Anthonia Baroi, psychosocial counselor and lecturer BRAC University, illuminated collaborative practices. The presence of Sebastian Groh, Associate Professor Brac Business School and a notable climate change entrepreneur, Lady Syeda Sarwar Abed, senior director of BRAC University, Professor Shaila Sultana, Director of Brac Institute of Languages, Tahsina Rahman, Joint-Director, Student Life and Dr. Dave Dowland, Registrar of Brac University, added a significant dimension to the day's proceedings.


The discussion portal opened with Dr. Sebastian Groh, Associate Professor of BRAC Business School, exploring a simple question- “What is impact and how can a student inspire positive impact”. A dynamic Active Listening Workshop, conducted by SIL's Founder and Coordinator, Srijan Banik, engaged students in a meaningful dialogue. Simultaneously, teachers embarked on a campus tour, gaining insights into the university's evolving landscape.

Creative Expressions on Mental Wellbeing:

The Wall Magazine display became a canvas for students to articulate their talents and share concerns about mental health. This interactive exhibit not only showcased creativity but also encouraged an open conversation about the intricate facets of mental wellbeing.

Following a brief interlude, students delved into a special workshop led by the Counseling Unit of BRAC University, featuring Ms. Anne Anthonia Baroi and Ms. Safina Binte Enayet. This session addressed the psychological nuances of student life and offered practical insights to navigate stress and hopelessness.

Panel Discussion: Building Bridges for Mental Health:

A pivotal moment of the exhibition unfolded through a thought-provoking panel discussion titled "From Schools to Societies; Building Bridges for Mental Health." Esteemed speakers, including Mr. Adnan Hossain, Ms. Hura Jannat Shikha, Anne Anthonia Baroi, and Ms. Zohora, shared insights into the vital role of Civil Society Organizations in mental health advocacy. The panel explored the correlation between digitalization and the mental health of students, shedding light on actionable steps for positive change. University Registrar Dr. Dave Dowland shared remarks on pertinent mental health issues, actively participating in a practical session of aura-cleansing exercises. The event concluded on a vibrant note with an entertainment session, featuring various performances by the talented students of BRAC University Arts and Photography Society.

This year, the Global Wall of Goodwill took on an impactful mission, extending its reach to universities from around the world including the American University of Central Asia, Bard College, the American University of Bulgaria, the American University of Beirut, and Ashesi University. What began as a heartfelt endeavor to foster positive connections has blossomed into a global movement with the partnership of the OSUN Global Engagement Fellows. Grounded in the belief that conversations on mental health should begin at the grassroots level, the project extended its reach to nine high schools and colleges in Dhaka. Over 600 goodwill messages were collected, forming a mosaic of shared experiences and sentiments. A unique aspect of this outreach was the collection of anonymous letters from students expressing their thoughts. In response, a dedicated student volunteer team from SIL is crafting thoughtful replies, promoting empathy and understanding. The success of the high school outreach program owes much to the unwavering dedication of the Outreach Team from Brac University. 

As the Global Wall of Goodwill continues to inspire and connect hearts across borders, it serves as a beacon for a more empathetic and compassionate world. Unity, kindness, and shared empathy: Led by the Social Impact Lab at BRAC University, this heartwarming project transcends geographical borders, creating a supportive global community through the simple yet profound act of sharing messages of kindness.

Picture a wall adorned with vibrant and colorful notes and drawings, each carrying a unique message of support, encouragement, and warmth. What began as a simple idea has blossomed into a movement that connects people from different corners of the globe, creating a sense of belonging and shared humanity. This year, our initiative took on an even more impactful mission, extending its reach to universities from around the world including the American University of Central Asia, Bard College, the American University of Bulgaria, the American University of Beirut, and Ashesi University (thanks to our friends- the 

!) Together, we formed a united front, amplifying the message of kindness and solidarity.

Our commitment to making a positive impact didn't stop there. Collaborating with the outreach team at BRAC University, we took upon a mission to initiate conversations on mental health in high schools and colleges across the capital of Bangladesh. Throughout the month of October, our dedicated team ventured into various high schools, igniting discussions and spreading awareness about the importance of mental well-being. And all we needed was just a blank wall to start the conversation!

Yesterday(12 December 2023) marked a significant milestone in this endeavor as the Global Wall of Goodwill Exhibition 2023 unfolded. It was a space where we dove deep into the sea of mental health discussions. From small acts of kindness to making a dent in societal norms, we explored it all with the high school students and experts.This whole adventure has been like watching a garden bloom. The wall isn't just a collection of messages; it's a testament to the fact that kindness has the power to change the world. The love on that wall isn't just seen; it's felt, understood, and embraced by a global tribe.

So, as we raise our virtual glasses (or real ones – your call) to this milestone, I want to shout a massive THANK YOU to everyone who jumped on this kindness train. Your efforts, big or small, have made our wall a canvas of love.

From Walls to Hearts: The Global Wall of Goodwill

In the midst of urban chaos, where issues flow as ceaseless as the rivers, a group of students from my water conservation and community research team at BRAC University is making a difference with a project called "EcoFlow Revive." This isn't your typical water conservation initiative; it's a dynamic force sculpting solutions to pollution, inefficiencies, and sanitation woes with unbridled passion.

At the heart of our story is Banani Lake, which used to be beautiful but is now facing contamination issues. "EcoFlow Revive" isn't sitting back; it's diving deep into the problems, looking beyond what we can see. We don't just want to clean up; we dream of Banani Lake becoming a healthy, lasting water source for the people in Korail.

Our journey begun with community driven research, the guide that still continues to lead us. We carefully studied pollution in Banani Lake and the water supply in Korail. With this information, we went to the heart of the issue—the KORAIL area—to see the challenges faced by the community.

With samples from Banani Lake and taps in Korail, "EcoFlow Revive" started a scientific mission. In our lab at BRAC University, we looked at bacteria and E. coli levels, turning complicated science into something everyone can understand. This openness empowers the community and sets the stage for everyone to work together for change.

As "EcoFlow Revive" gets ready for the next steps, education becomes a big focus. The team is now putting together workshop that aren't just about water; they're about helping people understand how important it is to take care of the environment. This isn't just about the lake; it's about changing how everyone thinks in the community.

But it's not just about getting the community involved; it's about doing things in a new way. "EcoFlow Revive" knows that real change needs everyone to take part, and we're open to new ideas. Using technology to check water quality and finding new ways to make the water better show our commitment to making things not just okay but great.

In the heart of BRAC University's Social Impact Lab, a new student-led initiative is making waves — Project C13. Led by three dynamic undergraduates — Durba Saha, Kezang Wangmo, and Shanen Anne Gomes — this project isn't just about talking the talk; it's about walking the green walk.

The C13 Mission: Turning Ideas into Action

Project C13, part of the Social Impact Lab's Project Associates Program, is all about turning students into environmental superheroes. It's not just a project; it's a movement to tackle extensive plastic consumptions, sort out paper wastage, and fight against food wastage at BRACU. How? By getting creative with stationery, DIY paper projects(all from reused and recycled plastics and papers!), and turning food scraps into bio compost.

Starting small on the university campus, C13 dreams big — a nationwide ripple effect that transforms how we see and treat our environment.

Recycling Paper: The Paper CraftsWorkshop

On October 30th, Project C13 took a giant leap towards its mission by organising a workshop at BRAC University's Mohakhali campus. Aligning with Sustainable Development Goal 13 (Climate Action), the workshop aimed to bridge the gap between environmental responsibility and meaningful engagement.

The workshop's special guest were the children from the Korail Slum. They were at the heart of the workshop, where they learned the art of making paper clay crafts. Beyond the creative endeavours, the workshop served as an educational platform, enlightening the young minds about the importance of recycling and responsible resource use. The comprehensive briefing on climate change left a lasting impression, demonstrating 

how discarded paper can be a powerful resource!

What made this workshop truly special was the ripple effect it created. University students present at the event were not just observers; their curiosity and interest mirrored the impact of C13's initiatives. The workshop showcased that sustainability isn't just a concept; it's a way of life that can be both meaningful and engaging.

Crafting Change: Project C13's Workshop Inspires Green Warriors

In the heart of the vibrant tapestry that is Bangladesh, I found myself captivated by a profound paradox—a country steeped in tradition yet yearning for progress. As I delved into the intricacies of this cultural landscape, I unearthed a deeply ingrained challenge that had long been brushed under the rug—the taboo around discussing sexual and reproductive health, especially among marginalized women. It was a whispered struggle, a challenge that called out to me with a sense of urgency, compelling me to embark on a research journey that would ultimately redefine the way healthcare is accessed and experienced by these resilient women.

The stories that emerged from my interviews were powerful testaments to the need for change. Marginalized women, living in the shadows of society, faced a dual battle—against societal norms that stifled their voices and against their own health issues that remained unaddressed due to cultural hesitations. The discomfort of discussing these matters, particularly with male doctors, often led to silence and sufferings. These women deserved better, they deserved access to accurate information and compassionate care.

In the midst of this challenging landscape, a glimmer of hope emerged—an idea that resonated with me on a profound level. Could technology, in the form of AI voice bots, be the bridge between tradition and progress? Could a virtual confidant, a non-judgmental voice on the other end of a phone call, provide the guidance and information that these women desperately needed? The concept intrigued me, and I set out to explore its potential.

As I delved into the world of human-computer interaction and AI, I found myself on a path of innovation and empathy. Designing a voice bot that could understand the nuances of Bangladeshi culture and language while providing accurate information about menstruation, sexual health, and more was a challenge that I embraced wholeheartedly. It wasn't just about creating a piece of technology; it was about crafting a lifeline, a beacon of empowerment that could pierce through the barriers of stigma and ignorance.

Listening to the stories of these women fueled my determination. Their voices became the driving force behind every line of code, every design choice, and every decision I made during the prototype's development. I imagined the voice bot as a friend, a companion who could provide reassurance, guidance, and understanding in a world that had often silenced them. It wasn't just about addressing physical health; it was about restoring agency and dignity.

But, as with any journey, challenges emerged. How could I ensure that the technology I was developing truly resonated with these women? How could I bridge the gap between their realities and the digital realm? These questions pushed me to collaborate with communities, to engage in meaningful conversations, and to fine-tune the voice bot's interactions to align with the cultural context.

As my prototype takes shape, I am filled with a sense of anticipation and hope. The potential of this AI voice bot to transform lives is staggering. It's not just about providing information; it's about instilling confidence, breaking down barriers, and rewriting the narrative of healthcare for marginalized women in Bangladesh. The impact ripples far beyond individual lives—it extends to families, communities, and the very fabric of society.

My journey is a testament to the power of innovation fueled by empathy. It's a reminder that technology isn't just a tool; it's a conduit for change, a catalyst for empowerment. The road ahead is filled with challenges, but I am driven by the stories of the women I've spoken to, by their resilience and strength. Together, with a supportive community and a shared vision, we can turn this prototype into a reality—a reality where marginalized women no longer suffer in silence, where their health is a priority, and where technology becomes a force for transformative change.

Bridging Healthcare Divides and the Whispered Struggles: AI Voice Bots and access to healthcare

There exists a group of young souls whose stories have long been silenced by the shadows of prejudice and discrimination: the children of sex workers, born into a world that condemns them simply because of their mother's profession. They yearn for the same joys, hopes, and dreams as any other child, but their path to inclusion and acceptance is riddled with obstacles society has unfairly placed before them. 

Imagine a childhood where innocence is tainted by societal scorn. A childhood spent hiding, pretending, and battling the weight of an unfair burden they never asked for. These children are born into a cycle of marginalization, their very existence questioned and their identities dismissed. Their mothers' struggle to provide for them in a harsh reality is overshadowed by a judgmental society, leaving these innocent hearts lost in a world that refuses to acknowledge their potential. 

As the sun rises over the horizon, casting a hopeful glow over the land, these children face the bitter reality of being denied access to a normal social life. They are deprived of the joys of camaraderie and friendship, for fear of the whispers that poison the ears of others. 

I want to imagine a world where these innocent souls are no longer condemned to the fringes of society. A world where the warmth of a genuine smile erases the wounds inflicted by judgmental glares. A world where their dreams soar high, unburdened by the weight of prejudice, and where they find their voice, a voice that echoes the stories of resilience and strength. 

The true essence of our mission lies not in merely pointing fingers at the system that perpetuates discrimination but in actively seeking solutions. We are driven by a vision that dares to dream of a world where every innocent soul is valued and respected for who they are, unshackled by the shadows of prejudice.

The journey towards inclusivity might be challenging, but in every challenge, lies an opportunity for growth and transformation. As we embark on this path, let us be fueled by the conviction that change is possible, that every step taken, no matter how small, creates a ripple effect of progress.

Our collective actions can shape a narrative that redefines the very essence of humanity. Each act of kindness, each moment of understanding, and each gesture of acceptance contributes to the tapestry of change that weaves us together as one united human family.

The Silent Struggles of Society's Forgotten: Embracing Inclusion, One Life at a Time

, setting the stage for a revolutionary mission that could transform the world as we know it. Srijan Banik, the Founder and Coordinator of Social Impact Lab BRACU, along with Fahmida Rahman, Senior Lecturer and Program Coordinator in the School of General Education, hosted a meeting where Pro Vice-Chancellors and Civic Engagement coordinators from prestigious universities worldwide agreed to join forces. Their mission? To expand the Civic Engagement Network and Social Impact Lab to establish a transformative network of Social Impact Labs spanning the globe.

But what makes this endeavor so vital for students? Imagine a world where students come together from every part of the globe, driven by their desire to create positive change. The Social Impact Lab network holds the key to making this vision real, breaking down barriers, and leading us toward a fair and sustainable future. In this incredible journey, each student becomes a guiding light, a symbol of hope among a group of leaders who are making a real impact. Together, with collaboration, new ideas, and shared dreams, we can witness a powerful movement led by young minds.


The leaders at the meeting also acknowledged that the significance of nurturing global citizenship cannot be overstated. As our world becomes increasingly interconnected, it is essential for students to understand the complexities and interdependencies that shape our societies. By fostering a sense of global citizenship, the Social Impact Lab network would cultivate empathy, cultural competence, and a deep appreciation for the interconnectedness of our global community. This, in turn, would inspire students to take up the mantle of responsibility and work collectively toward building a more inclusive, equitable, and sustainable future. 

As the meeting led by Mr. Srijan and Ms.Fahmida marked the first of many steps towards mobilizing universities across the globe, the energy and enthusiasm in that room set the stage for an extraordinary transformation. With hearts afire and minds alight, the seeds of the Social Impact Lab network were sown, and the wheels of change began to turn. Together, we can make a difference that transcends borders and transforms lives. 

Unleashing Global Potential: Expanding the Social Impact Lab BRACU into a Network (Conversation Starts!)

Social Impact Lab is a unit of the School of GenEd, BRAC University that works with the students to co-create social impact projects, civic engagement initiatives and research on identifying global and social problems. The Project associates will work at the Social Impact Lab as core members of a Social Impact Project to support its planning, execution, and evaluation to become an agent of change in their communities.

It is about addressing social, environmental, or economic challenges with innovative solutions or technologies and making a lasting difference in people's lives. The project will involve active participation in the public sphere to contribute to the common good, foster community development, and advocate for social justice

1st Year and 2nd Year students from all disciplines are encouraged to apply

 Support in planning and creating the upcoming project. This will also include joining the student meet-ups to identify issues that interests the students to work on.

Project Associate at SIL BRACU

BRAC University recently hosted an Outreach program on its residential campus that brought together some of the top high schools in the country to inspire high school students across the country towards creating a better future. The event featured two special guests – Srijan, Director of the Social Impact Lab of the University, and Patricia, Coordinator of OSUN. 



The Social Impact Lab, which aims to create a platform for students, faculty, and practitioners to collaborate and work towards solving real-world problems, was the perfect partner for this initiative. Led by Srijan, the lab's director, the workshop on "Idea to Action" was a fun and interactive session that gave students hands-on experience in turning their ideas into tangible solutions.

Patricia, on the other hand, spoke about the global partnership between BRAC University and OSUN. OSUN is a global network of educational institutions that integrates learning and the advancement of knowledge across geographic and demographic boundaries. It promotes civic engagement on behalf of open societies and expands access to higher education for underserved communities.

The Outreach program at BRAC University was a great success, with high school students from across the country participating in the event.  The Social Impact Lab BRACU and OSUN believe that creating a better world requires collaboration and innovation. This inspiring initiative is just the beginning, as BRAC University and OSUN will continue to work together to promote social impact and global education for all.

In conclusion, BRAC University's Social Impact Lab and OSUN's collaboration to inspire high school students to create change was a fun and inspiring event. Inspiring High School Students to Create Change

On March 13, 2023, a panel discussion was held on the topic of gender equity and the role of women in higher education and their role as leaders in the global sphere. The event was organised by Social Impact Lab BRACU and School of General Education BRACU as a part of the OSUN Gender Equity Month celebration. The discussion was moderated by Patricia Nae, the coordinator for Civic Engagement Programs at Open Society University Network(OSUN) and Central European University in Vienna, Austria, and featured a panel of inspiring speakers from different backgrounds and countries.

The panelists included Professor Ava Hossain, the President of the Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology, Dr. Marufa Akter, an associate professor at the Department of Global Studies and Governance in Independent University of Bangladesh, and Zarlash Sharmast, the coordinator for the Global Engagement Fellows program, OSUN and the director and CEO of the project "Afghanistan Politics on the Verge of Transformation."

The panel discussion began with opening remarks from Dr. David, the Registrar of BRAC University, and was followed by an insightful and thought-provoking discussion among the panelists. He expressed his appreciation for such a significant event within the Open Society University network. He highlighted the fragility of society and the importance of becoming a social activist in order to help build and safeguard an open and inclusive society. Dr. David also emphasized the fundamental importance of gender equality and female empowerment to human flourishing, which is a core value of the BRAC movement.

The event also addressed issues beyond the representation of females in senior leadership positions and in research, such as the relatively low numbers of females in science, technology, engineering, and math, as well as various barriers and issues of depreciation and even harassment. It was noted that there is a long way to go in achieving gender equity, but progress has been made, particularly in the representation of females in higher education across the world.

One of the main topics discussed was the importance of gender equity in higher education and leadership positions. The panelists shared their own experiences and highlighted the challenges that women face in accessing leadership roles in higher education and the need for systemic change to address gender disparities.

Professor Hossain, the first woman to hold the position of President of the Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology, shared her experience of breaking barriers in a male-dominated field and encouraged young women to pursue their dreams, regardless of societal expectations.

Dr. Akter discussed her research on gender politics and women and the need for substantive representation of women in Bangladesh. She emphasized the importance of creating equal opportunities for women and highlighted the role of education in achieving gender equity.

Zarlash Sharmast shared her experience of working with Afghan women and the challenges they face in accessing education and leadership positions, particularly in light of the recent political situation in Afghanistan. She emphasized the need for international support to ensure that Afghan women can continue to access education and participate in leadership roles. She is a director and CEO of the project Afghanistan Politics on the Verge of Transformation, has been part of the team that has been evacuating a large number of scholars from Afghanistan to partner institutions across OSUN. Additionally, she has been creating a photo story book titled A Journey from Kabul to Bishkek, documenting the travel and stories of Afghan scholars who were forced to leave their country and move to a safer place. This book is a testament to the resilience of these individuals and highlights the importance of providing opportunities for education and empowerment, particularly for women.

The students raised some interesting points once the floor was opened up to discussion. It was previously stated that to ensure gender equity, both men and women would need to work alongside each other, else this would be an impossible task. In relation to this, one of the main points of contention was how certain groups, mainly men, feel threatened or emasculated by the empowerment of women. This is obviously a major misconception on their part as the feminist movement does not try to separate any of the genders, but aims to achieve equal human rights for all. To alleviate this issue, the students discussed that young men needed to have positive role models to look up to. This is especially important during early development. As such, the responsibility falls on the family to educate their children about gender equity so that such misunderstandings do not pervade their lives in the future.

Another point of contention raised was why women did not seek the help of authorities when it came to any sort of inequality, especially domestic violence. While it is true that laws exist to safeguard women from such transgressions, the enforcers of said laws are patriarchal in nature, and so most pleas for help fall on deaf ears. The victims are instead blamed for the harm that befell them. At the same time, the women, who are usually housewives, have no other way to support themselves and their children without relying on their husbands even if they are treated cruelly.

The collaboration with the Social Impact Lab of BRAC University is noteworthy as it demonstrates the university's commitment to promoting social entrepreneurship and civic engagement with an international dimension. SIL is eager to take an active role in promoting gender equality by supporting projects that foster female leadership and entrepreneurship. One such project involves bringing together women from diverse regions to collaborate on climate change entrepreneurship in higher education spaces. Moreover, it is dedicated to actively participating in these events and initiatives to help create a more inclusive and equitable society.

Overall, the gender equity event was an important forum for addressing issues related to gender equity and female empowerment, particularly in light of recent developments in Afghanistan. The panel discussion highlighted the importance of gender equity in higher education and leadership positions and the need for systemic change to address gender disparities. The panelists emphasized the role of education in achieving gender equity and encouraged young women to pursue their dreams and break barriers, regardless of societal expectations. The discussion was a reminder that gender equity is not only a matter of social justice but also a necessary condition for achieving a more just and equitable society. It is hoped that events such as these will inspire more people to become social activists and work towards building and safeguarding an open and inclusive society.

Gender equity and women's empowerment are crucial for a fair and just society. Despite significant progress in recent years, there are still many challenges facing women's higher education globally. So to bring attention to these issues and inspire global action to promote gender equity and women's empowerment, Social Impact Lab BRACU together with School of General Education BRACU and Open Society University Network is organising a round table conference.

The panel discussion will be held in a hybrid format with live in-person participation available at BRAC University Bangladesh and American University of Central Asia, Kyrgyzstan and on Zoom for other Universities across Open Society University Network(OSUN). The discussion will be moderated by Patricia Nae, Coordinator for Open Society University Network Civic Engagement programs at the Central European University, Austria and the panelists include experts and leaders in the fields of education, government, non-profits, advocacy etc. Each panelist will have the opportunity to provide their thoughts and insights on the various topics.

The moderator will facilitate a discussion between the panelists and encourage a cross-cultural exchange of ideas and perspectives.

There will be opportunities for Students and audience members in each campus to ask questions and engage in the discussion through a Q&A session.



 Patricia Nae is working as a Coordinator for Open Society University Network Civic Engagement programs at the Central European University in Vienna, Austria.
She is a MA graduate in Nationalism Studies at CEU. Her research focus revolves around women in nationalist political parties in Central Eastern Europe.
Patricia has been working in the Romanian and European NGO sector since 2016, creating and implementing projects on youth and democracy promotion.



 Prof Ava is the President of Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology. She is the first Bangladeshi Ophthalmologist who holds this position in the history of 63 years of journey of APAO. She is also first women Ophthalmologist in this leadership position of Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO).

Prof. Ava is the first women fellow in Ophthalmology in Bangladesh and obtained FCPS in 1985. At present she is the Director cum Chief Consultant at OSB Eye Hospital, Mirpur, Dhaka. Her significant contributions towards preventing blindness in Bangladesh and Asia Pacific Region are widely recognized.

She has long 43 years’ experience in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in Bangladesh. She was also President of SAARC Academy of Ophthalmology, Ophthalmological Society of Bangladesh (OSB) and Founding President of Bangladesh Community Ophthalmological Society (BCOS).

She was recognized as the top 100 influential women ophthalmologists of the world by The Ophthalmologist power list 2021. In 2020 she received Honorary Fellow of All India Collegium of Ophthalmology (FAICO) Award, as a mark of an outstanding stalwart of ophthalmology.

Prof. Hossain is the recipient of many prestigious international and national awards, including APAO Distinguished Service Award, APAO Arthur Lim Award, APAO Achievement Award, Modasser-Daud-Mala SAARC Award, Alim Memorial Gold Medal and Life Time Achievement Award of OSB, Humayun Kabir Memorial Award of BAO.



 Zarlasht Sarmast is a recent graduate of the American University of Central Asia, Department of International and Comparative Politics. She has previously served as the Spokesperson for the International Committee of the Red Cross in Kabul, and Communications Specialist for GIZ in Central Asia. Zarlasht is currently working for the Open Society University Network working as a Program Coordinator for the Global Engagement Fellows program. She is the Director and CEO of the project “Afghanistan Politics on the Verge of Transformation''. After being a part of the evacuation efforts of AUCA and OSUN to get students out of Afghanistan and to safety, Zarlasht put together a photo story book titled “A journey from Kabul to Bishkek” where she shared stories that highlight the horrific journey which Afghan students had to take in order to reach safety. Zarlasht recently finished her first MA in the department of International Relations and Security at the OSCE Academy in Bishkek and is currently doing her second Master’s Degree in applied psychology at AUCA.



Dr Dave is the Registrar of BRAC University. He previously served successively as Registrar, Academic Registrar and in other senior positions in the UK higher education sector. He has contributed to strategic renewal, organizational development, internationalization and the deployment of services to support students, and the construction of external relationships and partnerships. In 2019, he was awarded an Honorary Fellowship of Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance – a leading UK based performing arts institution - in recognition of his outstanding service as Registrar and for leading the successful application to Her Majesty’s Privy Council for taught degree awarding powers.

Dr Dowland has also been active in the wider sector as a member of the National Executive of the UK Academic Registrars’ Council; Clerk to the Trustees of the AUA – an international professional development organization for higher education managers and administrators; and an institutional reviewer for the Quality Assurance Agency. He is a graduate of King’s College London and Oxford University; his academic specialization is the history of British higher education in the 19th and early 20th centuries. He has particular interests in student support, staff development and corporate and academic governance.



She is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Global Studies and Governance in Independent University, Bangladesh. She obtained a PhD in Political Science from University of Bremen, Germany and her dissertation titled: Women’s Political Participation in Bangladesh Parliament: A Case Study Analysis of Women’s Substantive Representation. She has obtained a Masters degree in Public Policy from Willy Brandt School of Public Policy, University of Erfurt, Germany under DAAD scholarship. She also holds a Bachelor and a Master of Social Sciences degree in International Relations from University of Dhaka. She has attended a one-year graduate course on Peace building, and Conflict Transformation at the SIT Graduate Institute in Vermont, USA. She works in the areas of women and politics; gender and governance; women, peace and security; conflict resolution and peace building. 

She has received many international awards and fellowships including Fellowship for Women in Conflict 1325 Fellowship Programme, Beyond Borders, Scotland, Fellowship Grant for the research on Women and Work in South Asia: Rights and Innovations, Firedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES), Dhaka etc. Find out more about

In 2022, BRAC University and The Graduate Programs in Sustainability at Bard College in New York, in collaboration with faculty at six other Open Society University Network (OSUN) institutions from Bangladesh, Palestine, Colombia, Kyrgyzstan, Bulgaria and the US launched an OSUN Global Certificate in Social Enterprise + Leading Change. The vision of the Certificate is to create leaders who can address the SDG’s by creating and building “Social Enterprises”: both nonprofit and mission-driven for-profit organizations. The Certificate offers theoretical perspectives and concrete tools for students from all disciplines—the arts, natural and social sciences, the humanities--who want to drive social change through building new organizations or transforming existing ones. The Certificate consists of three semester-long courses taught through a mix of synchronous global zoom sessions, as well as in-person sessions here at the Brac Business School (BBS), ensuring a high-touch approach to education. The courses are: Sustainable Development and Social Enterprise; Social Entrepreneurship, and Leading Change in Organizations (Social Intrapreneurship).

This Certificate provides leadership training in the critical thinking and skill sets needed to create and build “Social Enterprises”: both nonprofit and mission-driven for-profit organizations. It offers a focus on "sustainable business", theoretical perspectives and concrete tools designed for students from all disciplines—the arts, natural and social sciences, the humanities--who want to drive social change through building new organizations or transforming existing ones. This is your chance to earn a Global Certificate accompanied by top-of-the-class professors from across the world.

In line with these beliefs, together with his colleagues at SOLshare, Dr. Groh, the Founder, and CEO of SOLshare, a cleantech startup based out of Dhaka, Bangladesh that

 built the world’s first peer-to-peer solar energy exchange platform (World Economic Forum, 2018),
 raised USD 6.5M to date (50% in equity), and
 was coined the world’s best energy start-up (Free Electrons, 2018) & Earthshot Prize Finalist (2021).

Dr. Groh is a 2013 Stanford Ignite Fellow from Stanford Graduate School of Business and holds a PhD from Aalborg University and the Postgraduate School Microenergy Systems at the TU Berlin where he wrote his doctoral thesis on the role of energy in development processes, energy poverty & technical innovations, with a special focus on Bangladesh. He published a book and multiple journal articles on the topic of decentralized electrification in the Global South. He is an Associate Professor at BRAC University in Dhaka (Bangladesh) where he teaches strategic management, as well as social entre- and intrapreneurship at the Brac Business School (BBS) via the Open Society University Network (OSUN). In 2014, Dr. Groh founded SOLshare, acting as its CEO since then. On behalf of SOLshare, he received numerous awards, among them Tech Pioneer ‘18 by the World Economic Forum, Finalist at the inaugural Earthshot Prize 2021, the most prestigious global environment prize in history launched by Prince William, and 2022 Winner of the Zayed Sustainability Award. Dr. Groh became an Ashoka Fellow in 2018, a UBS Global Visionary in 2019, and a Member of the Board & VP at the Bangladesh-German Chamber of Commerce & Industry (BGCCI) in 2021.

The ceremony was an absolute success, with many insightful takeaways from all the guests. This is only just the beginning. We hope to continue inspiring young leaders and changemakers to make a positive impact on our society and build a better world for all of us.

The Millennium Fellows Class of 2022 at Brac University held their first offline session on September 30, 2022, paving the road for social impact work with new enthusiasm, visions, and values for young passionate leaders. They step forward to establish a community that supports a social cause and works to accomplish the SDGs to transform our society for the better. This year's delegation from BRAC University will be one of the biggest, consisting of a total of 23 young leaders. Each of their projects is inspiring and necessary for marginalized communities to thrive. Today, the 23 Millennium Fellows arrived to unpack the true meaning of social impact, create their project vision, and understand the community in which they want to serve while also embracing their core values. The Social Impact Lab (SIL) extends a hearty welcome to all members of the cohort and promises to support them in strengthening their community, expanding their network, and other necessary aspects.

. Today at dawn our veteran soul received a certificate of appreciation from The Vice Chancellor of BRAC University for demonstrating exceptional leadership through extracurricular activities. He has set an exceptional set of examples throughout the university amongst youths and young leaders. Nevertheless, he is a very kind and brilliant mind holding up ideas, creating impacts through society both nationally and internationally. We pray and wish the best for him.

SIL director wins special recognition award

This is an idea that we once thought was too ambitious to even pitch to 

 - establishing an entirely new organization to convene and inspire the student changemakers. And that idea is finally taking shape as the Social Impact Lab Bracu - an innovation hub that brings together student impact entrepreneurs to design and co-create ideas to create positive impact.

Following its official approval, today we had a 2hour long discussion session with the Registrar of Bracu, Dr. 

, Dean - School of GenEd, and Tahsina Rahman, Joint Director of Student Life about the upcoming plans and projects.
